On Friday the 13th of May a band of hearty fisherman backpacked into Fields Run in the Sproul State Forest wilds. This is their story. With only a minor delay in our start time and under threatening skies Liam Geleskie, Seth Balkey, Nick VanDerSluys, Alex Burka, Sully Hamdan, Bryant Anastasio, Eli Urban, Mr. Urban, and Mr. Shaw hit the trail (Fields Run Trail) about 5:30 PM. With camp set we had a small campfire, relaxed and set the plan for Sat. After an early rise, breakfast, and under still threatening skies we hit the stream. Mr. Shaw gave a quick technique/stream reading lesson we all hit the stream. By lunch, most had met the merit badge requirement of catching a fish and 5 actually were cleaning and cooking their catch. After the tasty "shore lunch", back to the stream for exploration and more fishing. By 5:00 pm we all had wet to very wet feet and it was back to camp for dinner. With the weather still holding we all talked around another small campfire until the long day caught up. Sunday morning the skies began slowly to let loose. Fortunately, we got packed and hit the trail out in a light rain. Everyone landed or nearly landed a native brook trout, hiked in and out without incident and returned safely back at the Knights by 11:30.
Weather reports for this week call for temperatures to be in the 50’s and as high as 60 degrees. We are finally getting a break from the Arctic freeze. What better way to celebrate than to have a Troop 83 Family Night complete with:
On Friday, January 21, a disorganized band of warm blooded scouts along w/ their cold blooded adult leadership prepared kindling boxes in preparation of the 2011 Klondike Derby at 7mtns. camp. Based out of the handi-craft cabin, maintained through the night by Nick "we'll keep the lights on for 'ya" VanDerSluys, Hunter, Tim G., Nate J. established sleeping quarters on the Trading Post porch. While Mr. B., Mr. G and Joan and Liam retired to tents.
Ten scouts and fours scouters traveled to Annapolis and the US Naval Academy to demonstrate the right way to camp on blustery January weekend. While some Troops were comforted in heated cabins (*8*), T83'ers earned 7 Below Zero Points.
